        Eco Newsletter – April 2008

This is our Eco Committee’s first newsletter. Through our newsletters we are going to inform you of our progress towards making our school more environmentally friendly.  Ultimately, we want our school recognised as an Eco School and to gain a Green Flag Award.

We began our journey in October. Our first task was to form a committee. We asked for people who were interested in recycling and improving things in Cromarty Primary School. From the interest, we were able to form a committee. We also asked for parent helpers.

Who are the Committee?

Tamzene Allison -  Chair, Tigue Mackenzie -  Secretary, Eilidh Matheson -  Treasurer, Elliot Chase, Berwick Johnson, George Faulds, Andrew Graham, Kieran Adcock, Lewis Taylor, Marley Mackenzie, Finbar McFarlane, Victoria Stuart - Martin, Struan McFarlane, Dean Mackay, Finlay McNaught, Heather Corpe, Gillian McNaught, Mrs. Swain and Miss Rose.

When do we meet and what do we do?

We meet on Wednesday mornings.

Here are some of the things we have done so far.

We have listened and talked a lot. We have carried out an Environmental Audit, which meant taking each of these areas -  Health and Well-being, Transport, Water, Energy, Waste Minimisation, Litter, Biodiversity, and School Grounds -  and asking questions about how we use them.

From our information we drew up an Action Plan, This details steps we are going to take to improve and become an Eco School.

We have already achieved a lot of things.

We have drawn up a litter rota.

We have collected many bags for the ‘Rag Bag’ recycling collection.

We have put a bird feeder up in the garden.

We are very grateful to Mr Nick Bates, Mr Alla MacDonald, Mrs. Veronica Elrick and Mrs Lindy Coutts for clearing out the shelter shed and finishing off dismantling the Octopus. They have made a great difference.

We have established an Eco Schools Information Board.

We have adopted the Red Squirrel as our logo.

We have worked on our Eco Code.

We have given an assembly to the whole school telling them about the Eco Schools Award.

We have begun to recycle paper.

We have two new compost bins

How can you help?

If you have any ideas of things we could do to make a difference please let us know.

If you would like to help us with any of our projects we would be very interested to see you.

People who are asking questions:-

Marley and Tiegan are doing Water.
